Well, it’s practically summer, wouldn’t you say? Which means farmers’ market season is upon us!

As it is still early in the season, this provides the perfect opportunity to plan your farmers market shopping routine for the summer. We want to ensure your fruit bowls and fridges are ALWAYS stocked and overflowing with delicious, locally grown produce and handmade goods, all summer long!

We've compiled the ultimate guide to Summer 2019 Manitoba Farmers Markets. Find one downtown, in your neighbourhood or plan a day trip just outside the city. No matter what area of Manitoba you are from, there’s a market for you!

*Before you go, make sure to call ahead to confirm the hours of operation and selection of fresh produce! OR check your favourite vendors social media pages as they often post live updates to their feeds!

Carly’s Tips For Navigating Farmers Markets like a pro

what to do:

  • Get there early! Fresh produce goes fast, we want to make sure you get your hands on the best produce the market has to offer.

  • When you get there grab yourself a coffee to get energized for some serious shopping. Do a lap or two and scope out the vendors - take note of who’s selling the freshest looking produce!

  • Come hungry and plan to eat there - farmers’ markets always have such yummy food. There are so many great vendors with fresh and delicious items to offer.

  • Farmers’ markets are often great places to find locally grown cut flowers and potted plants - for a very affordable price too!

  • Try new products and ask lots of questions. Don’t be afraid to engage with the farmers and use them as a resource. Ask them how to use the ingredient – how to cook it and what to pair it with.

What to bring:

  • Water bottle

  • Reusable coffee mug

  • Sunscreen and a hat

  • Sunglasses

  • Insulated freezer bag

  • Reusable grocery bags and produce bags

  • Most vendors accept debit/credit, however it is always safe to bring cash

Why shop local?

Shopping local supports small farmers and the planet! It keeps money in our communities and supports the economy. Less shipping distance often means higher quality produce and promotes more sustainable practices. Shopping local may also save you money - buying items seasonally often cost the same or LESS than at the grocery store!

Farmers’ markets are the place to be “one with the earth.” Be mindful to bring reusable items when possible and make sure to recycle any trash you may come across while you are there!
