Dressed Up Dogs (for Labour Day!)

Happy Labour Day Weekend, friends! Wow, it feels like summer had just started and here we are; September creeping in right around the corner. But hey, that doesn’t mean that we can’t squeeze every last ounce of summer goodness out of these days! In honour of that, I’m sharing some of my favourite gourmet hot dog recipes with you. These dressed up dogs will make the perfect addition to your picnic tables or backyard patios this Labour Day Long Weekend:

DELI DOG:

Let’s start with a spicy twist on a classic! By adding a few simple ingredients, you have elevated a basic hot dog to new heights.

INGREDIENTS

  • Sauerkraut 

  • SMAK DAB Curry Dijon Mustard

  • Everything Bagel seasoning (I love the one from Trader Joe’s but you can find a blend at Bulk Barn as well)

HAWAIIAN DOG:

Whether or not you’re a fan of Hawaiian pizza, you’ve gotta give this dog a try! It’s a fun take on Hawaiian, with the traditional hints of pineapple, combined with that teriyaki tang. This unique combination is a definite crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients


MAPLE TERIYAKI SAUCE: 

  • 2 tbsp SMAK DAB Canadian Maple Mustard 

  • 2 tbsp soya sauce

  • ½ tsp dried ginger (or 1 tbsp fresh)

  • 2 tbsp maple syrup (or coconut sugar)

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and microwave on medium-high for 1½-2 minutes, until the sauce is reduced and thick. Set aside to cool. 


PINEAPPLE SALSA: 

  • 2 cups fresh pineapple, cut into 2-3” chunks

  • 1 tsp SMAK DAB Hot Honey Jalapeno Mustard 

  • ½ sweet white onion, finely diced

  • ½ jalapeno, finely chopped, optional (or a pinch of chili flakes)

  • ¼ cup cilantro, finely chopped

  • 2 limes, juiced

  • ½ tsp sea salt

  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup

Grill the pineapple chunks on medium-high heat for about 2 minutes on each side, or until they have grill marks and are slightly charred. Allow to cool, then cut into small pieces and place in a bowl. Add the mustard, onion, cilantro, lime juice, salt and honey. Mix well and chill.

FRENCH ONION DOG:

This ain’t your grandma’s French Onion Soup Recipe! (But I bet she would enjoy it!)

INGREDIENTS

  • Caramelized onions

  • Gruyere cheese

  • SMAK DAB Honey Horseradish Mustard

  • Finely chopped chives or green onion

BUFFALO DOG:

Everyone seems to gravitate towards buffalo wings, but why not try a buffalo dog? It even comes complete with a dilly ranch spread (or perhaps, if you’re feeling extra daring, it could be used as a dilly ranch dipping sauce?) 

INGREDIENTS

  • Buffalo hot sauce

  • Dilly ranch 

  • Crumbled blue cheese

  • Thinly sliced celery


BUFFALO HOT SAUCE:

  • ¼ cup Frank’s red-hot sauce (or any other red hot sauce)

  • 3 tbsp butter (or vegan butter)

  • 3 tsp SMAK DAB Hot Honey Jalapeno Mustard 

  • Dash of Worcestershire Sauce

  • Pinch of garlic powder

Melt butter in a small pot over medium-low heat until melted. Remove pot from the heat and whisk in hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder until smooth and well combined. Cool. 


DILLY RANCH:

  • ¼ cup mayo

  • ¼ cup sour cream

  • 2 tsp white wine vinegar 

  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
